Eggplants

Raw never ... But cooked, what a passion!

Fruit or vegetable?

Coming from East Asia and West Asia, we all consider and call eggplants vegetables.
Their name has no Latin nor Greek origins. In Italy, they were first called Petonciana or Petronciano.

From these two names, an evolution of the term took place, distorting the beginning of the word with "mela" (apple), thus becoming "melanciana", up to the name with which they are still identified: "melanzana" (aubergine).

A work of art by nature

In previous years, eggplants were vastly used in art. Many paintings representing still life have
eggplants as their subject.
One example is the painting by the well-known sixteenth-century painter Giuseppe Arcimboldi, in
which an eggplant depicts the ear of the human figure.

Origin

Our eggplants come from Sicily, Calabria, Apulia, and Spain.
